Don’t Go for Second Best Baby…

Rihanna’s latest single ‘S&M’ has hit the number 1 spot this week on the Billboard Hot 100, making it her 10th number 1 single tying her with pop legend Janet Jackson.  Rihanna is the ninth artist to total at least ten Hot 100 No. 1s and the fifth solo female, following Mariah Carey (18), Madonna (12), Whitney Houston (11) and Janet Jackson (10).

Riri still has a long way to go before she reaches Mariah’s impressive 18 No. 1s, but with her latest album ‘Loud’ having a chalk full of number one contenders, is it possible that she can surpass Madonna making her the second female in music history with the most No. 1s?  The singled named divas could soon be sharing the same throne.

Did you know that Madonna has had half a dozen number 2 singles?   If these singles were to hit number one, she would have been tied with Mariah Carey having 18 No. 1 singles on the Billboard chart.

Here are the singles that have missed the top spot and had to settle for second best (baby)....
Material Girl
The single spent two weeks in the No. 2 spot, held off by REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling" and Phil Collins' "One More Night".  The week when the song slipped to position three, her upcoming single "Crazy for You" reached number four, giving Madonna two simultaneous top-five hits.

The single peaked at No. 2 the week of October 24, 1987, the same week Michael Jackson's "Bad" advanced to the No. 1 spot.  It remained the No. 2 position for three weeks, before descending from the chart.

The single debuted at No. 41, in the week of June 3, 1989, on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, and was in the Top 10 by the week of July 1, 1989, moving 13-6 that week. It eventually peaked at No. 2 spending two weeks in the runner-up spot beginning on July 15, 1989.

The single peaked at No. 2 on October 7, 1989 becoming Madonna's sixteenth consecutive top-five single, a record in Hot 100 chart history.
The single peaked at No. 2 where it stayed for four weeks, being blocked from the No. 1 spot by All-4-One's "I Swear".  ‘I’ll Remember’ became the fifth single by Madonna to reach the No.2 position and tied her with Elvis Presley for the most No. 2 songs.  This record was then broken by Madonna in 1998, when her single "Frozen" also peaked at two.

The single peaked at No. 2 and became Madonna’s sixth single to do so, making her the artist with most No. 2 hits in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.  Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ was the No. 1 single at the time.
